JDisc: Why are some devices not recognized?
JDisc Discovery classifies a device as an "Unidentified Device" when the IP address responds on the network but none of the protocols used were able to gather enough information to identify the device.
Common causes
1. Missing or incorrect credentials
The most common cause. Each device type requires specific protocols and credentials:
| Device type | Required protocol | Credentials |
|---|---|---|
| Windows computers | WMI | Administrative WMI credentials |
| Linux / Unix / macOS | SSH | SSH login credentials |
| Network devices (switches, routers, printers) | SNMP | SNMP community strings (v1/v2c) or SNMPv3 credentials |
| Virtualization | VMware/Nutanix API | API credentials |
Without valid credentials for the respective protocol, JDisc cannot identify the device — it will then appear as an "Unidentified Device".
2. Protocol disabled on the target device
- SNMP agent is not running on the network device
- SSH/Telnet is not enabled on the Linux server
- WMI service is disabled on the Windows machine
3. Firewall blocking access
- WMI uses DCOM/DCE-RPC — frequently blocked by firewalls
- SNMP traffic between the scanner and the target device is being filtered
- SSH port is not reachable
4. Device not supported by JDisc (rare)
In rare cases, the device is not included in JDisc's internal identification tables. This mainly affects:
- New hardware models without existing recognition rules
- Devices discovered only via mDNS or UPnP
Solution: Create a Support ZIP
If a device is not recognized despite correct credentials, a Device Support ZIP can be created from within JDisc:
- Select the affected device in a JDisc report
- Right-click > "Create Support ZIP"
- Optionally add a problem description
- Send the ZIP file to support@jdisc.com
The Support ZIP contains all the information the manufacturer needs to support the device in future versions.
Importing unidentified devices into i-doit
By default, "Unidentified Devices" are not imported into i-doit. If required:
From i-doit v36 onwards (JDisc Connector Add-on):
The new JDisc Connector Add-on provides a Device List showing all discovered devices including their sync status. Sync Profiles control which JDisc device types are mapped to which i-doit object types. Unmapped device types will not be imported.
Older versions (before v36):
In the import profile under Administration > Import & Interfaces > JDISC > Profiles, enable the option "Import unidentified devices".
Note
"Unidentified Devices" do not count toward the JDisc license. They can safely remain in the JDisc database until the recognition issue is resolved.
